Celebrating International Yoga Day: A Personal Journey of 30 Years in Yoga

Every year on June 21st, the world comes together to celebrate International Yoga Day, a day dedicated to the ancient practice that promotes harmony between mind, body, and spirit. For many, yoga is a transformative journey that leads to greater physical health, mental clarity, and spiritual awakening. For me, this journey began over 30 years ago and has shaped every aspect of my life.

Growing Up at the Temple of Kriya Yoga

My introduction to yoga was unconventional yet profoundly impactful. I grew up at the Temple of Kriya Yoga in Chicago, where spiritual practice was woven into the fabric of everyday life. At the age of six, I received my first mantra from  my mother’s guru, Goswami Kriyananda, a moment that ignited a lifelong passion for meditation. This early immersion in meditation laid the foundation for my spiritual and personal growth, guiding me through the every stage of my life.

The Discovery of Asana

While meditation was a constant companion throughout my childhood, it wasn’t until my early twenties that I began to practice the physical aspect of yoga, known as asana. This revelation came at a time when I was seeking a deeper connection between my body and mind. The practice of asana brought a new dimension to my understanding of yoga, emphasizing the importance of physical health as a complement to mental and spiritual well-being.

Sharing the Practice

For decades, I have dedicated myself to sharing the benefits of yoga with others. From  DVDs and writing books to contributing articles to health &wellness magazines and creating yoga products, my mission has always been to share the joy of movement. Digital technology has allowed me to expand my reach even further, offering downloadable videos and online classes. Today, I continue this journey through my platform, DesiBodymind.com, which integrates physical and mental health practices, providing a holistic approach to wellness.

The Essence of Yoga

Yoga, at its core, is about unity—uniting the mind, body, and spirit, and fostering a deeper connection with oneself and the world. On International Yoga Day, we celebrate this unity and the diverse ways in which yoga enriches our lives. For me, yoga has been a lifelong journey of self-discovery, healing, and growth. It has taught me resilience, patience, and compassion, both for myself and for others.

As we mark this special day, I encourage everyone to explore the transformative power of yoga. Whether you are a seasoned practitioner or a curious beginner, yoga offers a path to greater health and happiness. Remember, yoga is not just about perfecting postures but about embracing the journey of self-awareness and inner peace.
